Mini Split Maintenance: Filters, Coils, and Cleaning Kits
Mini split maintenance from the manual: filter cleaning every two weeks, coil and drain care, outdoor checks, cleaning kit prices and when to call a pro.
A mini split needs less work than its reputation suggests, but the work comes more often than with central air. Every indoor head has its own filters, its own coil and its own drain, and the filters need washing every couple of weeks in season. This guide turns MRCOOL’s DIY 5th Gen manual into a schedule, separates owner tasks from pro tasks, and prices the cleaning kits.
What maintenance does a mini split need?
Five jobs keep a mini split efficient: clean filters, a clear drain, a clean coil and blower, an unobstructed outdoor unit and a pre-season check. Only the filters need frequent attention.
| Task | How often | Who | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wash indoor filters | Every 2 weeks in season | Owner | MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen manual |
| Run the self-clean (Active Clean) cycle | As needed, 20 to 45 min per cycle | Owner, from the remote | MRCOOL manual |
| Keep the outdoor unit clear of debris, plants and snow | Ongoing | Owner | MRCOOL manual, ENERGY STAR |
| Pre-season inspection | Before heavy use and after long non-use | Owner | MRCOOL manual |
| Deep clean of indoor coil and blower | When dirty or smelly; MRCOOL’s kit listing suggests every 6 months | Owner with a kit, or a pro | Sylvane kit listing |
| Outdoor unit cleaning and service | When needed | Authorized dealer or licensed pro | MRCOOL manual |
Before any of it, MRCOOL’s rule applies: turn the system off and disconnect its power supply before cleaning or maintenance.
How do you clean mini split filters?
Cleaning the filters takes about ten minutes plus drying time. MRCOOL’s DIY 5th Gen manual gives these steps:
- Turn the unit off and disconnect the power. Wait 10 minutes before touching the filter.
- Lift the front panel; if it has a support rod, use it to prop the panel up.
- Grip the tab at the end of the filter, lift it, pull it toward you and slide it out.
- If there is a small air-freshening filter clipped on, unclip it and clean it with a hand-held vacuum.
- Wash the large filter in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse it and shake off the excess.
- Let it dry in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, which can shrink it.
- Clip the small filter back on, slide the filter in and close the panel.
Do not touch the metal fins while the filter is out; the manual warns that the edges are sharp.
How do you clean the coil and blower inside a mini split?
Start with the unit’s own cleaning cycle. On the MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen, Active Clean freezes the indoor coil and thaws it quickly so the meltwater rinses off dust, then dries the coil with warm air; the display shows “CL” and the unit shuts off after 20 to 45 minutes. The manual’s troubleshooting table also points to this function when cooling drops because of a dirty heat exchanger.
A deeper clean uses a cleaning bag (a “bib”) under the head, a coil cleaner and a spray bottle or pump sprayer, with the runoff draining into a bucket. Here the manual and MRCOOL’s own accessory pull in different directions. The manual says not to use water to clean the inside of the indoor unit and not to use chemicals or solvents on it, yet MRCOOL sells a Care Kit with a foaming cleaner, spray gun, water collection bag and drain hose for homeowners.
Our reading: the manual’s warnings protect the electronics from careless spraying, and the kit is the controlled way to do it. If you use a kit, follow its instructions exactly, keep water away from the control board and wiring, and hire a technician if the blower wheel itself is coated in mold, which usually means taking the head apart.
What should you check on the outdoor unit?
Keep it breathing. MRCOOL’s pre-season checklist says to make sure nothing blocks the air inlets and outlets, and ENERGY STAR’s placement advice is to avoid tight spots against shrubs and structures. Clear leaves, grass clippings and snow from around the unit, and keep stored items away from it.
The DIY 5th Gen helps itself here. Its heat exchanger dust removal function runs the outdoor fan in reverse for 70 seconds, 10 seconds after the unit is switched off, to blow loose dust and debris off the coil. Where snow is heavy, the manual calls for a shelter above the unit that does not obstruct airflow.
Look, but leave the rest alone. MRCOOL says any maintenance and cleaning of the outdoor unit should be done by an authorized dealer or a licensed service provider. While you are outside, check the line set insulation and the cover for damage; our line set guide covers cover kits.
How do you keep the condensate drain flowing?
Check the drain each season and any time water drips from the head. In cooling and dehumidifying, the indoor coil makes water that runs through a drain hose to the outside, and MRCOOL’s manual sets three rules for that hose: no kinks, no water traps (dips that hold water), and its end must not sit in water or in a container that collects water.
During installation, the manual’s drain test is to remove the filter and pour a small amount of water across the coil, then confirm it leaves the bottom of the unit and flows smoothly out of the drain. If a head drips indoors, turn it off, check the hose outside for a kink or blockage, and call a technician if it still backs up. In a garage or basement where gravity cannot do the job, a condensate pump is the usual answer; our garage mini split guide covers pumps and freezing.
What should you do before and after each season?
Run MRCOOL’s pre-season inspection after long periods of non-use or before heavy use: clean all filters, check for damaged wires, check for leaks, make sure nothing blocks the air inlets and outlets, and replace the remote’s batteries.
Before a long shutdown, the manual’s storage steps are to clean all filters, run fan-only mode until the unit dries out completely, turn it off, disconnect the power and remove the remote’s batteries. Drying the coil is the part people skip, and it is the step that prevents musty smells at start-up.
In winter, MRCOOL strongly recommends keeping the unit plugged in when it is below 32 F outside. The manual also says to turn the unit off immediately if a wire is damaged or abnormally warm, you smell burning, it makes loud or abnormal sounds, or the breaker or fuse keeps tripping.
What do cleaning kits cost, and when is a pro worth it?
A homeowner cleaning kit costs less than one professional visit. Prices at Sylvane on October 6, 2026:
| Product | What it is | Price |
|---|---|---|
| MRCOOL Cleaning Kit MMCK01 | Foaming cleaner, pull-rod spray gun, water bottle, collection bag, drain hose, replacement air-freshening filter | $79.99 |
| SpeedClean Mini Split Bib Kit | Plastic bib for units up to 44 in wide; uses pressurized water and cleaning solution | $109, or $125 complete with bucket |
| MRCOOL Care Program | Subscription with one cleaning kit a year and extended compressor coverage while enrolled | $14.99 per month (MRCOOL catalog) |
Hire a pro instead of a kit when the blower wheel is visibly moldy, ice forms on the indoor coil, water leaks indoors after you have checked the drain hose, an error code persists, or anything involves the outdoor unit’s coil, electrical parts or refrigerant. Those are service calls, not cleaning.
Does skipping maintenance affect the warranty?
It can. MRCOOL’s limited warranty for the 5th Gen DIY series covers parts for 5 years and the compressor for 7, but it does not cover normal maintenance described in the manuals, including filter cleaning, and it excludes failure or damage from improper servicing or improper operation.
A dirty filter will not void a warranty by itself, but a failure traced to neglect can fall outside it. Keep a simple log of filter cleanings and any service visits. A unit that runs flat out all season also works harder than it should; if a room never reaches its setpoint with clean filters, check the size with our sizing calculator.
Who should hire out mini split maintenance?
Some owners are better served by a yearly service visit than a kit:
- Heads mounted high or over stairs. A deep clean means working above head height with water and a bucket.
- Anyone who does not want to handle a moldy coil. A pro can take the head apart and clean the blower wheel properly.
- Multi-zone systems with four or more heads. Four sets of filters every two weeks, plus four deep cleans, adds up.
- Owners who will not keep a two-week filter routine. Dirty filters are the most common, cheapest-to-prevent problem; our mini split pros and cons page counts that upkeep as a real drawback.
If you are still choosing a system, the best DIY mini splits comparison sets the models side by side on specs and warranty.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what readers ask us most
How often should mini split filters be cleaned?
MRCOOL's DIY 5th Gen manual says every two weeks. ENERGY STAR's rule is to clean them when they look dirty or the filter light comes on. Dusty rooms, pets and workshops need the shorter interval.
Can I clean a mini split myself?
Filters, yes: switch off and unplug or cut power, wash the mesh filter in warm soapy water and let it dry out of the sun. Coil and blower cleaning is possible with a bag kit, but MRCOOL leaves outdoor-unit work to licensed pros.
Why does my mini split smell musty?
MRCOOL's manual lists moldy filters as a cause of odor, along with smells the unit absorbs from the room. Clean the filters first. If the smell persists, the coil or blower wheel likely needs a deep clean, which many owners hire out.
How much does a mini split cleaning kit cost?
At Sylvane on October 6, 2026, the MRCOOL Cleaning Kit MMCK01 was $79.99 and the SpeedClean Mini Split Bib Kit was $109, or $125 with a bucket. The SpeedClean bib fits units up to 44 inches wide.
Does skipping maintenance void a mini split warranty?
MRCOOL's 5th Gen warranty does not cover normal maintenance such as filter cleaning, or damage from improper servicing. A failure caused by neglect can fall outside coverage, so keep the filters clean and note when you did it.
What should I do with a mini split I will not use for months?
MRCOOL's manual says to clean all filters, run fan mode until the unit dries out completely, turn it off, disconnect the power and remove the remote's batteries. Below 32 F it recommends keeping a unit in use plugged in.
