Mini Split Line Sets: Lengths, Extensions, and Covers

Mini split line set sizes, maximum lengths and height limits, why pre-charged sets cannot be cut, extension sets and couplers, and what line set covers cost.

Mini Split Line Sets: Lengths, Extensions, and Covers
The short answer A mini split line set is the pair of insulated copper refrigerant lines between the indoor head and the outdoor unit. Size is fixed by the unit: on MRCOOL's DIY 5th Gen, 1/4 x 3/8 in for 9k-12k, 1/4 x 1/2 in for 18k and 3/8 x 5/8 in for 24k-36k. Pre-charged sets cannot be cut; buy the next length up and coil the extra.

The line set is the part of a mini split install that decides where the outdoor unit can go. Its pipe sizes are fixed by the model, its length is capped by the manual, and on a DIY pre-charged system it cannot be trimmed to fit. This guide covers sizes, length and height limits, extensions and covers, with numbers from MRCOOL’s own documents and October 2026 prices.

What is a mini split line set?

A mini split line set is two copper refrigerant tubes, each wrapped in foam insulation, running between the indoor head and the outdoor unit. The smaller tube carries liquid refrigerant and the larger one carries vapor. In the wall hole and down the outside wall, the lines travel in one bundle with the control cable and the condensate drain hose, drain at the bottom.

There are two kinds. A conventional line set is plain copper that an HVAC technician connects with flare fittings, evacuates with a vacuum pump and leak-tests before opening the refrigerant valves, which is licensed work in most places. A pre-charged quick-connect set, sold with DIY systems such as MRCOOL’s, arrives sealed and filled with refrigerant, and its fittings seal as they are tightened. This page focuses on the second kind.

What size line set does my mini split need?

The size is set by the unit, not by the installer. Each model lists a liquid-side and gas-side diameter on its spec sheet, and the line set must match both. On MRCOOL’s DIY 5th Gen single-zone line:

UnitLine size (liquid x gas)Line set in the boxMax pipe lengthMax height difference
9k (115 V)1/4 x 3/8 in25 ft (24.6 ft)75 ft49.2 ft
12k (115 V)1/4 x 3/8 in25 ft (24.6 ft)75 ft49.2 ft
18k (230 V)1/4 x 1/2 in25 ft (24.6 ft)75 ft65.6 ft
24k (230 V)3/8 x 5/8 in25 ft (24.6 ft)75 ft75 ft
36k (230 V)3/8 x 5/8 in25 ft (24.6 ft)75 ft75 ft

MRCOOL’s cheaper DIY Easy Pro and DIY Select lines ship with only 11.5 ft of line in the box, so a head on an interior wall often needs a longer set from day one. If you have not picked a unit yet, our sizing calculator flags when your planned distance is longer than the included set.

How long can a mini split line set be?

The installation manual sets the limit, and it has two parts: total pipe length and the height difference between the indoor and outdoor units. MRCOOL’s DIY 5th Gen manual allows 75 ft of pipe on every size, with the height limits in the table above.

Multi-zone systems also have a total for all heads combined. MRCOOL’s product page says its smallest DIY multi-zone condenser, a 3-zone 18k unit, supports 123 ft of line set in total, and its largest, a 6-zone 55k unit, supports 221 ft. Check the manual for your exact condenser; our multi-zone guide covers how those totals limit head placement.

For comparison, a contractor quote usually includes about 15 ft of line set, according to HomeGuide, with longer runs priced extra. Our installation cost guide shows how that shows up on a quote.

Can you cut or shorten a pre-charged line set?

No. A pre-charged set is factory-sealed with its own measured refrigerant charge, and the fittings are made to connect once. MRCOOL’s September 2026 catalog lists 2.12 oz of R-454B in its 11.5, 16 and 25 ft DIY sets, rising to 6.07 oz in a 50 ft 1/4 x 3/8 in set and 10.02 oz in a 50 ft 3/8 x 5/8 in set.

MRCOOL’s manual is explicit about the rest:

  • The sets are designed to be installed once; reconnecting one can leak and voids the warranty.
  • The outdoor unit’s couplings use tapping rings, so disconnecting and reconnecting the pipes can cause a leak.
  • Surplus line stays coiled, wrapped in protective tape, and stored flat behind the condenser.
  • Bends need at least a 4 in radius; bending a section more than 3 times or past 90 degrees can harden and crack the copper.

So the rule is to measure first, then buy the next standard length up. Never cut, braze or re-flare a pre-charged set; that turns it into a conventional system that needs a licensed technician, a vacuum and a recharge.

How do you extend a DIY mini split line set?

On MRCOOL DIY systems you either buy a longer pre-charged set or join two sets with a MRCOOL coupler. The catalog lists sets in 11.5, 16, 25, 35 and 50 ft lengths, in 1/4 x 3/8, 1/4 x 1/2 and 3/8 x 5/8 in sizes, plus two couplers: DIYCOUPLER-1412K75C and DIYCOUPLER-3858K75C. The joined total still has to stay within the manual’s maximum length.

Street prices at Sylvane on October 6, 2026:

MRCOOL pre-charged set25 ft35 ft50 ft
1/4 x 3/8 in (listed for Easy Pro and DIY Select)$409$502$587
1/4 x 1/2 in (listed for 18k DIY units)$272$510$599
3/8 x 5/8 in (listed for 24k and 36k units)$613$565$662

Two quirks are worth knowing. Listing prices do not always rise with length (the 25 ft 3/8 x 5/8 in set cost more than the 35 ft one that day), and Sylvane’s listings say only the 35 and 50 ft sets include a matching communication cable; the shorter ones rely on the 25 ft cable that comes with the indoor unit. Confirm the part number for your exact model with MRCOOL before you order; our MRCOOL DIY review lists the 5th Gen model numbers.

How do you measure for a line set?

Measure the route the lines will actually take, not the straight-line distance. Start at the back of the indoor head, go through the wall hole, then along or down the outside wall to the outdoor unit’s service valves. Add every vertical drop and every detour around windows, downspouts and corners.

Then compare that number with two limits: the set lengths you can buy and the manual’s maximum length and height. If the route is 27 ft, the 25 ft set in the box is too short and the next size up is 35 ft, with 8 ft coiled behind the condenser. If you are still choosing a unit, the length question can decide it: our best DIY mini splits comparison lists the included set and maximum run for each line.

What does a line set cover kit include and cost?

A line set cover is a plastic channel that encloses the lines, cable and drain on the outside wall. A kit usually includes straight sections, a wall inlet cover, one or more elbows, joiners and an end fitting at the condenser. Three kits sold at Sylvane on October 6, 2026:

KitWhat you getPrice
MRCOOL LineGuard wall duct kit (4.5 in)Complete kit; white, tan or gray$139 white, $145 tan or gray
Pioneer decorative PVC line cover kitCovers 10 to 12 ft of exposed piping; light beige$75 (9k-18k), $109 (24k-48k)
Senville line set cover kitSix 3.5 ft straight sections, 4 joiners, wall end cover, one 90 degree bend; light beige$65

Measure your outdoor run before buying: a 20 ft drop from a second-floor head needs about twice the straight length of a 10 ft kit, plus extra elbows for every corner.

Do you need a line set cover?

No, but it protects the lines and looks better. MRCOOL’s DIY manual has you wrap the bundle with the supplied non-adhesive UV tape, drain hose at the bottom, and says a separately bought cover encases the lines against weather and sun exposure and extends the life of the system.

A cover also makes upkeep easier to see: sun-cracked insulation on exposed lines is one of the things worth checking each season. Our mini split maintenance guide includes the outdoor checks. Whatever you install, do not block the condenser’s airflow.

Who should not plan a long DIY line run?

A long quick-connect run is the wrong plan in these cases:

  • The route exceeds the manual’s limits. No coupler makes a 90 ft run legal on a unit rated for 75 ft.
  • The set would be reused. Moving a DIY unit means new line sets; MRCOOL’s warranty also excludes units moved from their original address.
  • You are converting a conventional mini split. Standard copper lines need flaring, a vacuum and a leak test by a licensed HVAC technician.
  • The plan buries the lines under plaster. MRCOOL’s manual says the line set must not be plastered over.

The electrical side of any install, the dedicated circuit and the disconnect, belongs to a licensed electrician under local code.

Where do these numbers come from?

  • MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen installation manual (mc-diy-5-sz-im-um-en-01): maximum pipe length and height, single-use connections, tapping rings, bend radius, coiling surplus, UV tape and cover note.
  • MRCOOL DIY 5th Gen spec brochure (V 06.24.26): pipe sizes per model.
  • MRCOOL product catalog, V 09.16.26: set lengths, sizes, refrigerant charge per set, coupler part numbers, LineGuard colors.
  • MRCOOL DIY 5th Generation product page, read October 6, 2026: multi-zone line set totals.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to what readers ask us most

What size line set does a 12,000 BTU mini split need?

It depends on the model, so check its spec sheet. MRCOOL's DIY 5th Gen 9k and 12k use 1/4 x 3/8 in lines, the 18k uses 1/4 x 1/2 in, and the 24k and 36k use 3/8 x 5/8 in.

How long can a mini split line set be?

MRCOOL's DIY 5th Gen manual allows up to 75 ft of pipe, with height limits of 49.2 ft (9k and 12k), 65.6 ft (18k) and 75 ft (24k and 36k). Other brands publish their own limits in the installation manual.

Can you cut a pre-charged mini split line set?

No. Each set is factory-sealed with its own measured refrigerant charge, and the quick-connect fittings are single-use. Buy the next length up and coil the surplus flat behind the outdoor unit, as MRCOOL's manual directs.

Can you join two line sets together?

On MRCOOL DIY systems, yes, with MRCOOL's own couplers (DIYCOUPLER-1412K75C and DIYCOUPLER-3858K75C), as long as the total stays within the manual's maximum length. Do not mix brands or reuse a set that was already connected.

Do I need a line set cover?

No, but it helps. MRCOOL ships UV-resistant wrapping tape for the lines and says a separate cover protects them from weather and sun and extends system life. Cover kits sold for $65 to $145 in October 2026.

How much does an extra mini split line set cost?

MRCOOL pre-charged DIY sets listed at $272 to $662 at Sylvane on October 6, 2026, depending on pipe size and length (25, 35 or 50 ft). Conventional copper sets are cheaper but need licensed installation.
